Biofuel to Overtake Fossil Fuel Print E-mail

2013 is the year Brazil will have more biofuel hybrids than gasoline powered vehicles on the highway. The National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers forecasts that more of 52% of sales this year already will be flex-fuel.

  • 2003 - The first "flexi-fuel" vehicle rolled off the production line in Brazil.
  • 2007 - 12% of all cars sold in Brazil are biofuel hybrids.
  • 2008 - 90% of new vehicles in Brazil use biofuel in some form.
The biofuel of choice in Brazil is ethanol made from sugar cane. In 2007, the country produced 22 billion liters, which a little more than the United States produced.
