iTunes Outsells Wal-Mart Print E-mail

An online retailer outsold a brick-and-mortar retailer for the first time in 2008.
It is a little like comparing apples and oranges. A download from Apple could be a single title or an entire album, whereas the other top retailers sell only CDs. To correct for that, research analysts consider 12 singles equal to one album.
  • Q1 2008 - Apple traded places with Wal-Mart to become the biggest seller of music albums.
  • Q1 1992 - The last year that Tower Records appeared among the top 5 sellers of music.
Gleebit: Consumers in the US and elsewhere still buy more albums on CD than online.
