DVD Overtakes VCR Print E-mail

In May 2003, the DVD surpassed the videotape.
For the first time, more DVDs were rented than VHS tapes.
By the following year, the DVD had 60 percent of the rental market.
  • 1972 - In England, the first video was recorded on a cassette.
  • 200_ - The last consumer VCR was manufactured by Mitsubishi.
  • 2006 - The last movie was released on VHS.
Gleebit: In a stunt to promote digital video recorders, TiVo held a mock funeral in 2006 at the opening of that year’s Digital Life consumer technology show in New York's Jacob Javits Center. The first 500 mourners who brought a VHS tape to the memorial service got a free TiVo box. Source: Next Step Research
