About RSS Subscriptions Print E-mail

What is RSS and syndication?
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a way for you to see what’s new every hour or so without having to visit your favorite websites to keep checking the headlines. RSS checks for you, and presents the changing headlines from one - or multiple - sources in a little box. Just click on one of those headlines to read the story.

RSS also works with podcasts, so you can click on a title to hear the audio, too.

How do I use RSS?
You must subscribe TO a website WITH a tool. Choose one of these 3 tools:

  • Your Web browser

Simply click on this SUBSCRIBE button, and your browser will open a page showing our list of current news and podcast items. Save that page as a bookmark, and it will keep you informed of news updates. Your browser also should have options to subscribe through iTunes.
  • An application called a “news reader”
There are many programs that run on your computer to manage RSS feeds. They are faster and employ nicer interfaces than the other options. FeedDemon is a popular choice for Windows, but check out these other options. NetNewsWire and NewsFire are popular choices for the Mac. All newsreaders are inexpensive.
  • An online "aggregator"
This is a website that specializes in displaying feeds from other websites. There are many free ones, some a part of services you might already be using, such as Yahoo’s "My Yahoo" and Microsoft’s "My MSN". Click your aggregator of choice on the left, and you will be taken directly to your account. If you don’t have an account, click anyway, to learn how to get one.

How do I add the Next Step News Feed?

In Windows or Mac, right-click on this SUBSCRIBE button to copy the link to our feed. On a Mac, you also can also control-click to copy the link. Then paste it into your online aggregator account or into your newsreader program. Finallly, tell your aggregator how often to check the site.
